In a concerted effort to alleviate the suffering of disaster-affected populations in Malawi, Find Your Feet, in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Balaka District Council, is launching a vital cash assistance program to support families during the lean season. The initiative, scheduled to run from March 13 to April 13, 2024, aims to provide financial relief to 29,283 families across all 20 Traditional Authorities in Balaka District, offering each household K50,000.
This intervention comes at a critical juncture, as findings from the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) reveal that 39,333 households in Balaka are at risk of food insecurity during the lean months. With the food gap worsening, the timely response by Find Your Feet and its partners seeks to ensure that vulnerable families can access essential resources to sustain themselves through this challenging period.
Councilor Pharao Kambiri praised the initiative, emphasizing its importance in addressing the escalating food crisis. “This response has come at the right time when the food gap is worsening. We are grateful to Find Your Feet and the World Food Programme for stepping in to support our communities when they need it most,” he remarked.
The response initiative is more than just a distribution of funds; it represents a commitment to safeguarding the lives and dignity of those most affected by the ongoing crisis. Find Your Feet’s dedicated team is currently on the ground, conducting community-level sensitization and household verification exercises. These efforts are crucial in ensuring that the assistance reaches the intended beneficiaries promptly and efficiently, minimizing any potential delays or challenges.
The cash assistance provided through this program will empower families to purchase food and other necessities, helping them navigate the difficult lean season. By directly addressing the immediate needs of vulnerable households, the initiative aims to prevent further deterioration of their living conditions and support their resilience against future shocks.
This collaboration between Find Your Feet, WFP, and the Balaka District Council is a testament to the power of partnerships in tackling food insecurity and other challenges faced by disaster-affected populations. As the program unfolds, it serves as a beacon of hope for thousands of families in Balaka, demonstrating that timely and targeted interventions can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need.
