On April 3, 2023, a significant milestone in rural economic empowerment was marked when Sean Fleming, the Irish Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, handed over four solar irrigation kits to the Tiyanjane Savings and Loan Group. The group, consisting of beneficiaries of the Social Cash Transfer Programme (SCTP), received the kits during a ceremony at Kapalamula Primary School in STA Kapalamula, Balaka district.
This initiative, part of the “Strengthening the Resilience of Poorest Families in Malawi through Savings and Loans Groups” project, is funded by the Irish government through UNICEF Malawi. Find Your Feet is implementing this project, which targets 6,700 households in Balaka and Ntcheu districts. The primary goal is to empower low-income rural families by establishing savings and loan groups, providing them with the tools to build financial resilience.
The handover ceremony was attended by notable figures, including the Minister of Gender, Jean Sendeza, and the Executive Director of Find Your Feet, Melina Mtonga. This event marks a crucial step in enhancing the livelihoods of rural communities in Malawi.
