Harvesting Success: Lucy Phiri’s Journey to Sustainable Farming in Northern Malawi

Lucy Phiri, a dedicated smallholder farmer from Enukweni Section in Bwengu Extension Planning Area, reflects on her recent harvest: “I cultivated a local maize variety on a 0.3-hectare plot where I applied manure. Here in the north, the harvesting season has just begun, and my rough estimates for maize yield are between 2,000 and 2,250 kilograms. I received training from Find Your Feet on how to make manure using organic wastes.”

Lucy is one of the many farmers who benefited from the TRANSFORM programme, implemented by Find Your Feet in Rumphi and Mzimba districts. The programme, which has now successfully concluded, aimed to support 35,000 smallholder farmers in achieving sustainable agricultural transformation. Through this initiative, farmers like Lucy have seen significant improvements in income, food, and nutritional security.

This impactful project was made possible with the continued partnership and financial support of Norwegian Church Aid Malawi.
